Why?:The Fatal Frame series is just awesome. It's one of the few games that are classified under survival horror and actually are. More or less it can scare the crap out of basically everyone. It does a good job of getting the essence of a traditional haunted house in japan.

Fatal Frame 3: The Tormented
So it'd be nice if you knew what the game was going to be about am I right? So here's the games sum up.

For one the game has a concept of Silent Hill 4 to it. There is a reality world and a nightmare world. All three of them are dealing with the nightmare when they go to sleep. They wake up back in reality.

A freelance photographer named Rei Kurosawa gets a job assignment at a house that was reported 'haunted'. During her stay at the house she takes a picture of a man who is her dead fiance Yuu Aso. Scared and confused, she goes to get help from one of her boyfriends close friends, Kei Amakura (a writer). And also from her assistant Miku Hinasaki. During their exploration of the mansion, Rei finds that a blue snake tattoo is slowly making it's way across her body. Unfortunately for Rei, she's noticed that some of the spirits in the mansion have the same exact tattoo covering them.

The camera Obscura is in the game. Of course.



The Characters

Rei Kurosawa:
A freelance photographer who is grieving over her dead fiance Yuu Aso. She wishes that she could just once more see him even if it is just in a dream. Her assistant is Miku Hinasaki. Rei gets a job offer to photograph a supposedly haunted house, and she and Miku take the job. While taking pictures, her ex-fiancee, Yuu Asou, who died in a car crash that Rei ws driving, shows up in the picture. That night when she goes to sleep, she has a dream where she's trapped inside of The Manor of Sleep and can't leave. She sees Yuu inside and follows him. When she wakes up, though, she finds that a tattoo is spreading over her body, and it will kill her if she doesn't find a way to stop it. Rei's special ability is "Flash." When it is used, the Camera Obscura emits a very bright flash that stuns all ghosts nearby and, for a few seconds, makes them vulnerable to Shutter Chances.

Ruri:
Ruri is Rei's black cat. She has no important role in the story, but she may be there because of the superstitious element that black cats carry, or their connection with the sixth sense.

Miku Hinasaki:
The heroine of Fatal Frame 1. In The Tormented, she is Rei's photography assistant and also lives with her. After the loss of her brother, she was left in the care of Yuu Aso. He was the one who introduced her to Rei. But not without a problem of her own. Miku believed that her powers disappeared along with her brother back during her first run in with Himuro Mansion. But she was wrong. Miku, also, begins to have the same dreams as Rei does, along with the spreading tattoo. She also thinks that the entire dream and everything in it, including the visions of Mafuyu, aren't happening. But as she makes her way through the mansion once more, she finds that it is only just beginning. Miku also places the blame of the curse affecting them on herself. Saying that it is her fate and they are the one's suffering for it. Miku cannot use any special lenses in the game, but is given the ability to use "Double" and her "Spirit Stone." Double lets Miku continue to charge the shot of a picture she takes, double the normal limit, while her Spirit Stone lets her slow down the action of everything around her, including ghosts, which makes it much easier to achieve a Fatal Frame on many faster ghosts.

Kei Amakura:
A non-fiction writer who knew Rei's boyfriend and also worked with Mafuyu Hinasaki. He goes to the mansion and like Miku, is trying to tell himself that none of this is real. That it is all a lie. And of course, he has his own goal while looking through the mansion. He is searching for his niece Mio Amakura. He has almost no sixth sense, though he is given the ability to move heavy objects and hop the rooftops in the game. He also is able to use the ability "Hide," which allows Kei to couch down behind object to avoid the sight of many very strong ghosts that would be hard or impossible to defeat normally, adding an element of stealth to Kei's chapers.

Yuu Aso:
Yuu Asou: Rei's fiance and one of Mafuyu's close friends. Yuu was given responsibility of Miku after her brother disappeared. During a car drive with Rei behind the wheel, they get into an accident and he is killed. After his death, Rei takes in Miku and allows her to live with her as her photography assistant. In a picture that Rei took at the mansion, Yuu appears in it, but this is after his death. When Rei dreams, she sees Yuu sometimes and she begins to follow him deeper into the mansion, and deeper into the curse.

Mio and Mayu Amakura:
The main characters from Fatal Frame II make another appearance, only Mio is actually seen. After Fatal Frame II, Mio was found near the place she and her sister found themselves in All God's Village. Mayu, was still missing, however. Mio knows, though, that in reality, Mayu is dead. Mayu's death takes Mio into the Manor of Sleep and the curse takes hold of her too. Kei was lured into the mansion by the vision of Mio and progresses through the manor in search of her.

Yoshino Takigawa:
It appears that Rei, Miku, and Kei aren't the first ones to fall victim to the curse. Yoshino was put into a hospital due to a plane crash where she was the only survivor. Her entire family was on the plane with her, and they all died. She eventually went into a comatose state in the hospital. Rei meets her for the first time in the nightmare world. She has been consumed by the tattoo. She begs Rei that if Rei ever wakes up, if she could wake her up as well. Rei eventually finds her in the hospital, only to find a rather unpleasant sight...

Reika Kuze:
Reika is the topless woman that you see throughout the game. She was the most recent and the last Priestess to go through the freakish ritual that takes place deep inside The Manor Of Sleep. The tattoos symbolize the pain and suffering of the people in the town nearby, and she bears their pain for them in the form of her tattoos. This ritual is the only thing that can keep The Rift closed, which is very similar to Fatal Frame I's "Malice" and Fatal Frame II's "Repentance."
